SAINT SALVATORE
CHURCH
This church, which dates back before 1416, unfortunately
had serious damages caused by the famous inundation in 1682. It was covered
with mud and sand and remained about two metres below the square level until
1935, which is the date of its reconstruction. Inside the church we can see the
wooden central altar built in 1607, in which there are “The Madonna of Itria”
supported by two basilian monks. On the right wall we can see some pictures by
Tomasi (Jesus and Mary, the Transfiguration, the Holy Family, the Spasimo of
Sicily). On the door there are: the wooden statues of Stephen, Saint Micheal and Saint Barbara. At the bottom of the left nave there is
the organ made by Annibale Lo Bianco in 1735. There is also the Font, which has
some frescoed features of the Scenary of Tortorici on its faces. On Good Friday
Evening, the very suggestive and touching procession of the varette starts from
this church.
