SAINT NICOLA CHURCH
It was built on the remains of a Byzantine basilica in the
IX century and is considered the oldest church. It was destroyed during the
inundation in 1682, rebuilt later on the same place and finished in 1804. The
building shows a style of the eighteenth century, and it has only a nave which is covered by a wooden
coffered ceiling decorated in collage. Inside the church there are: a wooden
statue of Saint Giuseppe with the child by Sebastiano Leone; Giuseppe Tomasi’s
pictures, “The Souls of Purgatory” and “The Sorrowful Virgin”, other pictures
by Francesco Napoli, Saint Nicolò of Mira and The Circumcision. Besides the
altars, which are of great value, you can’t miss the magnificent organ made in
1570.
