SANTA MARIA DELL’ANNUNCIAZIONE
“BATIA”
SAINT MARY OF THE
ANNUNCIATION CHURCH
It was built by the Bishop Gaetano Galbato about from 1754
to 1757. When the Bishop died he was buried in the “Batia” church and a
tombstone on the floor recalls his memory. Some pictures have been removed from
the old church after the inundation in 1682. In the church there are possessions of invaluable Value. For example: three marble statues made by Gagini’s
family and two of them must have been painted by the most famous and prestigious
member of it, that is Antonello Gagini. Of course it is not less important
Saint Margaret (Daisy) which was carved by some marble workers from Palermo
about in 1500, but the origins of the “Annunziata” attributed to Giovannello
Gagini date back to 1400. There are three other very important paintings which
represent the Annunciation (imitation of the most famous Leonardo’s painting),
made by the painter Spinosa in 1760. The Clarisses’ Convent which was
suppressed in 1866, was part of this church and the premises were used as a
prison and a school until it was an almost decaying building and, in 1950, it
was completely eliminated.
